A 17-year-old driver and her 12-year-old passenger, both from Dexter, died in a two-vehicle collision south of Roswell Sunday, according to New Mexico State Police.

A press release issued Monday stated the 17-year-old female driver of a 2009 Ford Focus and her 12-year-old female passenger died from injuries sustained in a crash that happened at about 2:30 p.m. on New Mexico Highway 2, near Crockett Road in Chaves County. Both were pronounced deceased at the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator. Their names were not released by authorities.

Early findings from the investigation indicate a 33-year-old Roswell man in a 2003 Oldsmobile Bravada SUV was traveling southbound and attempting to pass another vehicle in the northbound lane when he rammed head-on into the Ford Focus. The Ford caught fire and became engulfed in flames.

According to the press release from State Police, the driver of the Oldsmobile was later transported by ambulance to a local hospital for what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing, but drugs and alcohol appear to have been a factor. According to the press release, charges against the driver of the Oldsmobile will be pending based on the outcome of the investigation into the crash.
