For the Goddard girls’ soccer team this was a long time coming. None of the seniors or key contributors had forgotten the way they lost at Los Alamos in the quarterfinals in 2019, when the altitude made it a different game than they were used to playing.

Tuesday’s game was supposed to be held in a neutral location but was switched to Cielo Grande Soccer Complex because the Lady Rockets were the higher seed. Coming into the game, the No. 4-seed Lady Rockets were hot. The only thing hotter than them scoring goals was the temperature, at 90 degrees.

Goddard would jump all over Los Alamos early in the game and score two quick goals. They went on to win 4-0 over the Lady Hilltoppers Tuesday and advance to the semifinal game against the No. 1 seed, St. Pius X.

“My gosh,” Goddard coach Jamie Martinez said. “The girls were ready, and they wanted it. We were working on some stuff. The girls have kept improving and improving. We worked on some stuff and the girls bought in.”

Goddard got off to a fast start when senior Abi Edwards scored the first goal within the first minute of the game. It wasn’t a minute later when Sarah Mathison scored another goal to give the Rockets a 2-0 lead they would never relinquish.

Seniors Ambrosia Teasyatwho and Alexis Hoover added additional goals to salt the victory away and send the Lady Rockets to the semifinal round for the second time in Martinez’s career.

“This means the world to the team and seniors,” Martinez said. “I think we have a shot to win it all against St. Pius X. If these girls come ready to play, I like our chances.”

Martinez said if his team believes in themselves they can beat anyone when they play their game and get after it. “I think this is a special team,” Martinez said. “We don’t have to do anything special but play our game.”

Goddard will play Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at St. Pius X.
