The city of Roswell’s Keep Roswell Beautiful organization will help local residents celebrate Arbor Day by again handing out tree and shrub seedlings for citizens who wish to plant them in their yards or other properties.

The Arbor Day Drive-Thru Seedling Giveaway is scheduled for April 17 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Cielo Grande Recreation Area, 1612 W. College Blvd. This is a free event that will offer two seedlings per vehicle and tree- and shrub-care information will be provided. Also, a planting-demonstration video will be posted on the Keep Roswell Beautiful Facebook page and the city website. Seedling delivery to each vehicle will be contactless.

The trees and shrubs being offered are types that are well adapted to this area and usually do well in this region. The seedlings to be given out this year are little leaf sumac, desert mountain mahogany, bur oak, New Mexico forestiera, Palmer’s penstemon, pecan, Rocky Mountain juniper, fernbush, Arizona walnut, Texas red oak, netleaf hackberry and golden currant.

As a bonus during this year’s event, Friends of Spring River Zoo will offer free pinecone birdfeeder kits while supplies last.

National Arbor Day is the last Friday of April each year, but each state celebrates it on a day of its choosing. In New Mexico, it is officially recognized on the second Friday in March. The Roswell event is annually scheduled to take place between the state and national dates for Arbor Day.
