A 7-vehicle pile-up closed a section of U.S. 285 south of Roswell Saturday afternoon.

No major injuries were reported in the incident that occurred in the southbound lane near mile post 89, though three people were transported to nearby hospitals for what were believed to be minor injuries, Ray Wilson, public information officer with the New Mexico State Police, said.

Initial findings from the investigation, Wilson said, indicated that crews from area fire departments were dispatched to the area at 3 p.m. in response to a grass fire in the median. Before fire units could arrive, a call reported that heavy smoke and winds had decreased visibility and caused the crash.

Traffic was diverted onto nearby county roads for several hours while tow trucks cleared the scene, Wilson said.

In addition to State Police, the Chaves County Sheriff’s Office and the Hagerman Police Department were among the agencies that responded.
