Crews on the front lines continued to make progress over the weekend in battling a fire that has burned for the past week in Lincoln County, despite red flag warnings and increased risk of fire spread brought on by high winds.

“Strong winds yesterday tested the fire lines constructed by fire crews over the past several days. Fire lines withstood that test, and significant progress continues to be made in containing the Three Rivers Fire,” a message posted Monday on the Three Rivers Fire 2021 Facebook page stated. The page is managed by the incident command team charged with containing the fire.

According to the post, as of Monday morning, the fire was 7,119 acres and 23% contained.

Some fuel — such as grasses and trees — in the fire perimeter remain unburned and crews will concentrate on locating and mopping up hot spots.

With Monday’s rain, the Facebook message states, firefighters will be able to continue making progress in extinguishing the fire. Crews will also be looking to respond to threats fire could pose to property in the affected area. As the threat abates, equipment will begin to be redirected to other fires in the region.

According to the message, the bulk of the Lincoln National Forest remains open, but it, along with Mescalero Apache Tribal Land and other areas, remain under fire restrictions. A closure order has been issued for the White Mountain Wilderness Area.

The restrictions remain in place to reduce the risk of fire.

Bonito Canyon Road past the Bonito Lake Dam, Nogal Canyon Road past the Nogal Peak Trailhead, the Three Rivers Trailhead and Campground and the Monjeau Lookout at Sierra Vista all remained closed as of Monday.
