Court records state that Jesus Robles, 36, of Roswell was sentenced Friday to 15 years in prison — the maximum sentence for second degree murder in New Mexico.

He was given an additional four years because of his past felony convictions, plus another year for using a firearm in commission of a crime. Upon completion of his prison term, Robles will be required to serve five years on parole.

Judge Thomas Lilley of New Mexico’s 5th Judicial District Court handed down the sentence after a jury convicted Robles following a three-day trial that ended April 8. Lilley on Friday also set a trial date of Aug. 10 for Robles on a separate count of receipt, possession or transportation of a firearm by a felon in the case, according to court records.

Robles shot 33-year-old Griselda Rascon on Oct. 4, 2019 at Rascon’s 400 block of Deborah Drive residence. Rascon was subsequently taken by ambulance to Eastern New Mexico Medical Center, where she later died.

Rascon’s nine-year-old daughter — the only other person in the house with Robles and Rascon just before the shooting — testified at the trial that hours before the shooting, she heard her mother and Robles arguing loudly. The argument soon turned violent.

The daughter testified that at one point, at the urging of her mother, she ran out of the house to get Robles’ cousin, who lived across the street. When she and Robles’ cousin entered the house, they found Rascon shot in the head but still alive.

The daughter testified that Robles then walked past her and pushed her down before leaving the house. Robles was later found by police and arrested in Las Cruces.
