Local Memorial Day closures announced

Local schools and government offices will be closed Monday, Memorial Day, a federal holiday.


Dexter public schools and Roswell public schools have a school holiday. Hagerman schools ended their regular academic year on May 20, while Lake Arthur will have its last regular school day Friday.

Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell also will be closed Monday. All campus offices will be closed and only summer session online classes will be held.

The campus will reopen and summer session in-person classes will begin on Tuesday, June 1.

Local government offices

Chaves County administrative offices will be closed, while the city of Roswell has announced closures or altered schedules.

The city indicated that city offices, the landfill, the Roswell Public Library, the Roswell Museum and Art Center and the Roswell Adult Center will be closed.

The outdoor pool at the Roswell Recreation and Aquatic Center will be open noon to 6 p.m. on the holiday, but the rest of the center will be closed. Spring River Zoo and the Roswell Visitor Center will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Memorial Day.

City bus service and trash pickup will be altered because of the holiday.

Roswell Transit will have buses in operation only on Main Street that Monday. The buses will run from 9:08 a.m. to 5:01 p.m.

The Solid Waste Department’s trash pickup for the week of May 31 has been adjusted. Areas south of Alameda Street plus areas east of Garden Avenue between Alameda and Second Street (normally picked up Monday and Thursday) will have their trash containers picked up Tuesday and Thursday. Areas north of Alameda (normally picked up Tuesday and Friday) will have their trash containers picked up Wednesday and Friday.
