Six new cases of COVID-19 reported in county

Chaves County recorded six new cases of COVID-19 in Wednesday’s daily case update from the New Mexico Department of Health, pushing the county’s total over 9,000.

The health department reported 167 cases in 17 counties and one correctional facility in Tuesday’s update. The highest number of cases, 33, were reported in Bernalillo County, but the Torrance County Detention Facility reported nearly as many, with 32.

Doña Ana County reported 21 cases, San Juan County reported 19, Santa Fe County 13 and Rio Arriba County 12. The rest of the counties all reported fewer than 10 cases.

The total number of cases in the state is 202,570, with 9,004 cases in Chaves County.

Three deaths were reported in the state: a man in his 80s from Cibola County and two women in their 70s from Eddy County. One of the women had been hospitalized and had underlying health conditions.

The total number of deaths in the state is 4,254.

In vaccinations, 910,231 New Mexicans age 16 or older are fully vaccinated, totaling 54.2%, while 1,082,567, or 64.4%, have received at least one dose. In Chaves County, 17,129, or 34.5%, are fully vaccinated while 19,935, or 41.3%, have received at least one dose.

Chaves County is at the Green Level in the state’s COVID-19 risk assessment system, having met two of the three gating criteria used by the state. Those two criteria are average number of daily cases at or below 10 cases per 100,000 people and a test positivity rate of 7.5% or less. The county was at 5.6 cases per day and a test positivity of 2.38%. The goal for full vaccination rate in the latest assessment was 45%.
