Chaves and Lincoln county residents, especially those in rural areas, should be prepared for the possibility of lightning, large hail, wind gusts and thunderstorms until at least 6:15 p.m. tonight, according to a weather warning issued by the National Weather Service.

The notice issued at 5:13 p.m. indicated that a “severe thunderstorm” had been spotted about 27 miles northwest of Roswell and was moving southeast about 10 miles an hour.

The storm could produce ping-pong-ball-sized hail, wind gusts of up to 60 miles an hour and possibly dangerous “cloud to ground” lightning.

“This severe thunderstorm will remain over mainly rural areas of east central Lincoln and central Chaves counties,” the notice said.

It is advised that people and animals remain inside well-built structures, away from windows, until the storm threat passes.
