A chance of thunderstorms and heavy rain could continue in Chaves County and other parts of New Mexico through Sunday night, according to information released Saturday morning by the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service was forecasting a “slight to marginal” risk of severe storms in eastern New Mexico, including Chaves County, today (Sunday) through Memorial Day. The agency indicated that lightning, damaging winds and large hail were possible.

The Albuquerque office of the National Weather Station also reminded people on its social media sites about the possibility of flooding, especially in saturated areas, over the holiday weekend. The agency reminded people that a storm does not have to be directly overhead to affect their area. The agency recommended that people leave campgrounds or other areas if they notice rising water levels.

In Roswell, rain chances as of Saturday were predicted to be 60% for Sunday and 60% for Monday, dropping down to 40% or less for the remainder of the upcoming week.
