This year, Roswell Community Little Theatre (RCLT) is sponsoring the Battle of the Bands 2021. The winner will open for the UFO Festival’s headliner Chevel Shepherd on July 3.

Shephard is a New Mexico native, known best for winning NBC’s music competition TV show “The Voice,” Season 15, under the tutelage of Kelly Clarkson.

Gina Montague is an actor and director at RCLT. She is in charge of the band competition. Asked how she and RCLT got involved, Montague said, “This past winter, we (RCLT) did plan a talent search at the theater and it was suggested that we host a battle of the bands. We thought that was a great idea. I mentioned it to the (RCLT) board, and said I would like to direct that, but because of work obligations I probably wouldn’t be able to. And so I put it out there in case any other directors were interested in directing that event.

“It turned out that I was able to direct it. A couple months ago, I don’t know how they (the city and event agency organizing the 2021 UFO Festival) heard about it, but they contacted us. We joined forces and it worked out.”

Montague hopes to have bands apply that feature a variety of music genres. There will be a selection process, because there is a time limit on how many bands can perform at RCLT’s Battle of the Bands. Montague said up to five bands will be “battling” it out on stage.

Deadline to apply is June 15, there is no entry fee and every band can enter, even if they are outside of Roswell and Chaves County. Montague said she will be in charge of the auditions as well. “It will be in person or live audio if they are from out of town, we’ll figure something out,” she said.

The finalists will be judged by the public on July 2 at RCLT, 1717 S. Union Ave. at 7 p.m. “Everyone who buys a ticket — they are $5 at the door — gets a vote ticket, when they come in, to vote for their favorite band. They can also purchase additional vote tickets to vote for their band,” Montague said.

Asked how bands can enter, Montague said, “If they go to our website at roswelltheatre.com, there is a button on there: Battle of the Bands. They can click on it and download the entry form, the rules, liability waiver, all that information is there. If they have questions, they can email me at ufobattleband@gmail.com.”
