A local group of people want to renew a special use permit to run a horse training and racing and rodeo venue in Dexter.

Juan Meraz said that he and his partners bought the property at 70 Vista Largo Road about three years ago and had rented it for some time before.

He said they have been operating with a special permit since about 2006, although he is aware that some current county officials have questions about whether the permit has been valid for all those years. He said it has been.

“Every three years, we have to get permission” for the permit, he said.

He said that racing events are planned for about once a month, with no betting and no alcohol permitted.

The special use permit sought also would allow for rodeos or other special events at the site.

The permit is scheduled to be discussed this evening at the Chaves County Planning and Zoning Commission meeting at 5:30 p.m. in the Chaves County Administrative Center, 1 St. Mary’s Place.

As of press time, the matter is the only zoning issue expected to be considered and possibly voted on during Tuesday’s meeting.
