One man died early Saturday in an ATV crash south of Artesia.

According to a press release issued Monday by New Mexico State Police, 22-year-old Benjamin Ray Hernandez, 22, of Artesia died from injuries he sustained after being thrown from the 2016 Honda Side by Side ATV he was driving near South 26th Street and West Fairgrounds Road.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing, but the press release states initial findings indicate that sometime before 1:42 a.m. Saturday Hernandez was traveling west on West Fairgrounds Road, when for reasons not yet known the ATV entered a curved section of the road and rolled over.

“Hernandez, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the ATV,” the press release states. He was subsequently transported to Artesia General Hospital by emergency medical personnel, where he later died from his injuries.

The press release states alcohol does not appear to be a contributing factor.
