Janet (Beanland) Smith, age 70, passed away June 12, 2021. No services are planned and she will be interred alongside her husband, Marvin A. Smith (1944-2019) at the General Douglas McBride Veterans Cemetery in Roswell, New Mexico. She was born to Leonard C. Beanland (1923-2015) and Marjean Beanland (1924-2021) in Berkeley, California, on January 24, 1951, and was raised in Castro Valley. She graduated form Castro Valley High School in 1969 and went on to earn a degree in sociology from the University of California, Hayward.

After college, Jan was employed by Pacific Gas & Electric company in their General Construction Department. She worked in Human Resources, Project Management, and the IT Department; retiring after 35 years as a Network Specialist. She travelled all over California to field offices teaching personnel how to use the new computer systems. Jan went on to manage construction projects in the department. Jan was few of the women working in IT.

In 2nd grade, Jan joined the Girl Scouts. After high school she help lead backpacking trips for the Girl Scouts in the High Sierra mountains of California. One summer she went over the same mountain pass three times with different groups. Jan was a lifetime member of Girl Scouts.

Upon retirement, Jan and Marvin moved to Roswell in 2006 and immediately became involved with the community. She was leader of Girl Scout Troop 31, she coordinated delivery of cakes and cookies to NMMI Cadets for the Roswell Symphony Orchestra, and she worked on the UFO Festival.

In 2014 Jan was asked is she could help sew costumes for a musical that a new theatre group was staging. The production was Les Miserables presented by Way Way Off Broadway; she sewed costumes for more than 70 actors. Jan went on to become the Lead Costume Designer and Wardrobe Master for over 15 musicals including Mary Poppins, Seussical, Peter Pan, Mama Mia, and Grease.

Jan was always a gardener but when she moved to Roswell, she learned that New Mexico gardening was not the same as gardening in the San Francisco Bay Area. She joined the Home Garden Club and held offices of Recording Secretary, 2nd VP, 1st VP, and was President twice. She also held offices in District V, was the New Mexico Gardens 2nd Vice President for two terms. She was the recording secretary the Southwest Region of Garden Club. She won Best in Show in 2019 at the Eastern New Mexico State Fair Flower Show.

During a weekend outing in Sacramento, CA, Marvin and Jan stopped at a Celtic Festival where they learned that “Smith” was a Scottish sept of Clan Macpherson. Marvin and Jan were involved with Clan activities while in California; Jan was the US Branch Recording Secretary. Jan helped coordinate the annual potluck at the Pleasanton (CA) Scottish Games. In Roswell, Jan was the Chairman of the US Branch Annual Meeting in Albuquerque. Marvin and Jan attended Clan gatherings around the US and in Scotland.

Jan is survived by her brother Michael Beanland (Joretta) of Vancouver, WA, and her nieces and nephews Robin Camp (WA), Summer Beanland (OR), Emerald Beanland (OR), Jesse Beanland (OR), and 1LT Larkin Beanland (WA). She is also survived by Marvin’s daughters DeAnna Rivas (TX), Marvine Blackburn (TX), and Tana Long (TX).
