MainStreet Roswell is one of 28 Main Street organizations in New Mexico to receive accreditation or reaccreditation this year from the Main Street America program, according to information provided by the New Mexico Economic Development Department.

Another three MainStreet groups in the state are affiliated programs of the national group.

In a Wednesday announcement, the department also said that New Mexico MainStreet, which is part of the EDD, was licensed as a coordinating program.

“Congratulations to our local programs for their impactful work and receiving designation on the national level,” said New Mexico MainStreet Director Daniel Gutierrez. “It’s an honor to have Main Street America as a valuable partner to support our mission to engage people, rebuild places and revitalize economies in New Mexico.”

According to the announcement, the New Mexico MainStreet organizations have since 2014 reported 1,015 new businesses and business expansions; 4,209 new jobs; 1,736 private building rehabilitations; $176.4 million in private sector reinvestment; and 258,664 volunteer hours.

The New Mexico MainStreet and Main Street America organizations annually evaluate the local groups to determine if they are meeting the 10 performance standards required for accreditation. Those standards focus on creating sustainable revitalization programs. There are 898 accredited groups in the United States. The Main Street America organization is part of the nonprofit National Main Street Center Inc., which is a subsidiary of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

“During an incredibly challenging year, these programs demonstrated the power of the Main Street movement to drive impressive local recovery efforts, champion small businesses and foster vibrant downtown districts,” said Patrice Frey, president and chief executive officer of Main Street America. “I am inspired by their hard work and confident that these accredited communities will continue to help their downtowns flourish in the next stages of recovery.”

MainStreet Roswell most recently received its national accreditation status in 2018.
