A Chaves County Sheriff’s deputy and a man being held in custody were both treated for injuries sustained in an officer-involved shooting incident that occurred Sunday.

The incident occurred at the Chaves County Sheriff’s Office, according to a post on the agency’s Facebook page. Undersheriff Charles Yslas said the shooting happened at about 2 p.m. after a man who was arrested on charges of aggravated assault upon a peace officer and resisting, evading or obstructing a law enforcement officer was brought to the Sheriff’s Office.

Yslas said the shooting took place when the man attempted to take a deputy’s firearm and was shot during the fight for the weapon.

He said the deputy was not shot but was transported to a local hospital for injuries related to the incident and has since been released. The suspect was also taken to the hospital for his injuries, which Yslas described as not fatal.

The names of the suspect and deputy have not been released. Yslas said the suspect will face multiple new charges in connection with Sunday’s officer-involved shooting incident but did not say what those charges would be.
