Chaves County records another 9 COVID cases

Chaves County had nine new COVID-19 cases Tuesday, the New Mexico Department of Health has announced.

Those nine were part of New Mexico’s daily total of 242 new cases among 23 counties and two institutions, a federal prison and federal immigration detention center, both in Otero County.

Two deaths were reported Tuesday in New Mexico, a man in his 60s from Lea County and a man in his 40s from Bernalillo County who was said to have been hospitalized and diagnosed with underlying conditions.

The number of New Mexico residents who have died since March 2020 has reached 4,402.

Chaves County’s case total is now at 9,165. Of those, 8,897, or 97%, are considered recovered. Deaths of county residents since March 2020 have totaled 172.

Statewide, the recovery rate is about 94%, or 196,698 recovered residents out of the 209,356 total cases during the past 16 months.

Dr. David Scrase, acting Health Department secretary and the Human Services Department secretary, plans to give a webinar Wednesday at 3 p.m. to update the public on the COVID and vaccine situation in the state. The webinar will occur on the Health Department’s Facebook page.
