Chaves County is preparing to develop its own recreational cannabis regulations and will hold a special meeting this week as an initial step in that endeavor, although the actual regulations will not be considered until later in the month.

The Chaves County Board of Commissioners will hold a special meeting Wednesday, Aug. 4, at 9 a.m. to request permission to publish for a public hearing regarding the regulations.

The public hearing would be held Aug. 19 during the regularly scheduled Chaves County Board of Commissioners meeting.

The special meeting will occur at the Chaves County Administrative Center, 1 St. Mary’s Place. The meeting also will be livestreamed on the county’s Facebook page.

County Manager Bill Williams said that the Planning and Zoning Department and the county’s legal team have been working on the regulations affecting cannabis growers and sellers in light of state legislation passed this year that legalizes the sale of recreational cannabis.

Williams said that draft regulations will be available for public review in time for the public hearing.
