A Roswell parent running for the school board of Roswell Independent School District said he’s doing it for the kids and parents.

“I don’t feel like the current school board’s really listening to parents. Also it’s my civic duty to participate in my children’s education,” John Cheney said.

He’s running for the District 3 seat against incumbent Milburn Dolen.

Cheney has one child in the school district, a high-school freshman, and is a 2002 graduate of Goddard High School. He said his family has roots in Roswell that go back four generations.

He earned an associate’s degree from Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell and works as an end-user support technician for the New Mexico Public Safety Department.

Cheney said his experience as a parent will aid him in being on the school board.

“My priorities will be the students, making sure they get the education they deserve,” he said.

School board elections are nonpartisan. John Cheney is challenging incumbent Milburn Dolen in District 3.

District 3 is predominantly west of South Main Street and South Nevada Road to the county border and south of west Second Street.

Seats representing Districts 1 and 5 are also up for election this year. Election Day is Nov. 2 and early voting starts Oct. 5.
