According to court records, the crash happened in the area of East Vista Parkway and North Main Street at about 11:49 a.m.

Before Roswell Police arrived on the scene, the driver of one of the vehicles, later identified as 62-year-old Michael Whitt of Roswell, was reportedly seen running from the scene, heading east on Vista Parkway.

The male driver of the other vehicle and a female passenger who was with him were later treated at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center for minor injuries. The driver was transported to the hospital by ambulance, while the passenger drove there in a personally owned vehicle.

Under questioning by police, court records state Whitt said the collision happened while he was traveling northbound on North Main Street and tried to turn left to get to West Vista Parkway. He added he did not see any vehicles heading southbound when he made his turn and allegedly caused the collision. Whitt added that he fled the scene on foot to head home and retrieve his driver’s license.

The driver of the other vehicle said he was heading south on North Main Street when Whitt reportedly pulled out in front of him. He added that he was not able to stop before the collision.

Electronic court records state that Whitt is charged with and has pleaded not guilty to one count each of leaving the scene of an accident, no great bodily harm or death; failure to yield right-of-way while intending to turn left; failure to give immediate notice of accidents; failure to give information and render aid, no great bodily harm or death; leaving the scene of an accident, damage to vehicle; failure to produce evidence of registration; improper display of registration plate; and no insurance.

Following an appearance Friday in Chaves County Magistrate Court, Judge E.J. Fouratt released Whitt on his own recognizance.
