Local man among COVID-19 deaths reported Friday

A Chaves County man was the third local death related to COVID-19 reported this week and the county’s 192nd since the pandemic began.

The man in his 70s had been hospitalized. His death occurred more than 30 days ago, according to the New Mexico Department of Health’s daily case update Friday. Deaths related to COVID-19 are reported when a death certificate is issued and some certificates are delayed due to insufficient information, according to the health department.

Fourteen other deaths were also reported Friday. Four of the deceased were from Bernalillo County, three from Lea County, two each from Curry and Doña Ana counties, and one each from Eddy, Grant and Torrance counties.

Their ages ranged from a man in his 30s and a woman in her 90s, both from Bernalillo County.

The total number of deaths in the state is 4,869.

Thirty-one counties reported 972 new cases of COVID-19 in the state Friday.

Chaves County had 55 cases, the most in the southeast region. Lea and Eddy counties each had 27 cases, followed by Lincoln County with 18, Curry County with 14, Quay County with seven, Roosevelt County with four and De Baca County with one.

Elsewhere in the state, Bernalillo County had 240 cases, San Juan County had 164, Santa Fe County had 62, Doña Ana County had 61, Otero County had 58 and Sandoval County had 54.

The total number of cases in the state is now 258,943, including 12,210 in Chaves County.

As of Friday, 342 people were hospitalized for COVID-19 in New Mexico.
