Dexter jumped out to an early lead at home Friday night against West Las Vegas thanks to big plays that excited the home crowd while putting points on the scoreboard. It looked as though the evening was trending in the direction of a Demons win. But the Dons of West Las Vegas, behind a relentless offensive attack, eventually came back and built a lead Dexter couldn’t overcome later in the game despite their best efforts at a comeback.

Ultimately, the Dons came out on top 39-27 Friday night in Dexter. The loss drops the Demons to 3-3 on the season as they prepare for a contest next week against local district foe the New Mexico Military Institute.

In Friday’s game, Senior quarterback Juan Fuentes got the Demons on the board early with a long touchdown run, which was followed up by a successful two-point conversion, making it 8-0, Dexter, with 10:51 left in the opening quarter.

The Dons, however, would answer back in short order. With 7:53 to go in the first West Last Vegas found the end zone. The point-after attempt was unsuccessful, leaving Dexter with a slim lead, 8-6 — which the Demons would build on later in the quarter, thanks to a touchdown run by Joel Venegas with 3:15 remaining. This time the two-point attempt was no good, leaving it 14-6 in favor of the Demons.

A few minutes later the Dexter defense came up with an interception to halt a West Las Vegas drive but ultimately couldn’t capitalize on the takeaway, in terms of points. The quarter ended with the score Dexter 14, West Las Vegas 6.

The Dons then began to get on track offensively in the second quarter, putting together a run that would ultimately carry them to victory on the evening. West Las Vegas scored a touchdown at the 11:35 point in the second, making it 14-12 after an unsuccessful try at points-after. Then, at the 9:09 mark, found the end zone again to make it 19-14 in favor of West Last Vegas. Another six points with 6:12 left in the half made it 25-14, Dons.

The Demons weren’t done scoring. They found the end zone as Fuentes pitched the ball to Venegas at the 3:38 mark, followed by an unsuccessful point-after attempt, for a 25-20 differential in favor of the Dons. A few minutes later the Demons’ defense came up with another takeaway, a fumble recovery, but couldn’t turn it into points.

In the waning seconds of the half, West Las Vegas would score again to take a 32-20 lead into the locker room. Each team would add another touchdown in the second half for the 39-27 final.

The Demons’ next game will be at home against New Mexico Military Institute on Friday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m.
