Two local COVID deaths reported Tuesday

Two local deaths, including the county’s youngest recorded death related to COVID-19, were among the 14 reported Wednesday by the New Mexico Department of Health.

One Chaves County death was reported as a male under the age of 20 on the daily case report. It’s the first death of someone under the age of 20 in the county. The death of a woman in her 50s who was hospitalized and had underlying health conditions was also reported for Chaves County. Their deaths bring the county’s total to 194.

Also among the deceased were six people from Bernalillo County, two from Curry County, and one each from Doña Ana, Lea, McKinley, and Taos counties.

The total number of deaths in New Mexico is 4,899.

Twenty-nine counties and one correctional facility reported 709 new cases of COVID-19 in the state Wednesday.

Chaves County had 41. Also in southeast New Mexico, Curry County had 10, Eddy County had 30, Lea County had 22, Lincoln County had seven, Quay County had three and Roosevelt County had 10.

Bernalillo County had 198 cases, while Doña Ana County had 76, McKinley County had 45 and Sandoval County had 42.

The total number of cases in the state since March 2020 is 262,078, including 12,323 in Chaves County.

As of Wednesday, 310 people were hospitalized in the state for COVID-19.
