Local woman among COVID deaths reported Thursday

Chaves County recorded another COVID-19 related death and 55 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, according to the New Mexico Department of Health.

A woman in her 30s is the county’s 195th death related to the disease since March 2020. She had been hospitalized and had underlying health conditions, according to the daily case update from NMDOH.

A total of 20 deaths were reported Thursday. They also included four people from Bernalillo County, three from Cibola County, two each from Eddy and San Juan counties, and one each from Colfax, Doña Ana, Lea, Mora, Sandoval, San Miguel, Sierra and Union counties.

The ages of the deceased ranged from the Chaves County woman in her 30s to a man and a woman in their 90s from Cibola and San Juan counties.

Fourteen had been hospitalized and seven had underlying health conditions.

The total number of deaths in New Mexico is now 4,919.

Chaves County had the most new cases Thursday in southeast New Mexico. Curry County had 15, De Baca County had one, Eddy County had 31, Lea County had 19, Lincoln County had seven, and Quay and Roosevelt counties each had four.

Every county in the state reported new cases Thursday for a total of 879. Bernalillo County had the most in the state, with 189. San Juan County had 117 and Doña Ana had 75.

The total number of cases in the state since March 2020 is 262,954, including 12,377 in Chaves County.

As of Thursday, 369 people were hospitalized for COVID-19 in the state.
