State reports more than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases

New cases of COVID-19 took a jump Thursday compared to the week’s previous reports as the New Mexico Department of Health reported 1,132 cases in the daily case update.

Tuesday and Wednesday’s reports combined totaled 1,147 cases.

Chaves County reported 45 cases Thursday, second in the southeast region to Lincoln County’s 46. Eddy County reported 27 cases, Lea County 21, Curry County had nine, Roosevelt County had three and Quay County had one. The Lea County Correctional Facility reported three new cases, the first cases reported there since April 12.

Statewide, Bernalillo County had 283 cases, San Juan County had 169, Doña Ana County had 98 and McKinley County had 57. Twenty-nine counties and one other correctional facility reported new cases in Thursday’s update.

The total number of cases in New Mexico since March 2020 is 267,909 with 12,557 in Chaves County.

Seven deaths related to COVID-19 were reported, including one from Chaves County.

The man in his 60s had been hospitalized and had underlying health conditions. His is the 199th COVID-19 related death in the county.

Among the other deaths, two were from Bernalillo County. Eddy, Harding, San Juan and San Miguel counties each reported one death. Four of the deceased had been hospitalized and five had underlying health conditions.

The total number of deaths in the state is 4,973.

As of Thursday, 379 people were hospitalized in New Mexico with COVID-19.
