County records 200th COVID-19 death

Chaves County recorded its 200th death related to COVID-19 on Friday.

Friday’s daily case update from the New Mexico Department of Health included the death of a man in his 90s from Chaves County. He had underlying health conditions, according to the report, and was one of 14 deaths in the report.

Of the other deaths, four of the deceased were from Bernalillo County, two each from Lea, Quay, Sandoval and San Juan counties, and one from Lincoln County.

Twelve had been hospitalized and eight had underlying health conditions.

The total number of deaths in the state is 4,987.

The state health department reported 982 new cases of COVID-19 in 31 counties Friday. Chaves County had 27 cases, the highest number in southeast New Mexico. Lea County had 19, Curry County had 16, Eddy County had 15, Lincoln County had 12, Quay County had five, Roosevelt County had four and De Baca County had one.

Across the state, Bernalillo county had 228 cases, San Juan County had 167, Doña Ana had 99, and Otero County had 68.

The total number of cases in New Mexico since March 2020 is 268,891, including 12,584 in Chaves County.

As of Friday, 352 people were hospitalized in New Mexico for COVID-19.
