Chaves County records 201st COVID-19 death

A Chaves County man was among the 11 deaths related to COVID-19 reported by the New Mexico Department of Health on Tuesday.

The man, in his 70s, had been hospitalized, according to the daily case update. His is the 201st death related to the disease in Chaves County.

Of the other 10 deaths, Bernalillo and San Miguel counties each reported two. The rest were from Curry, Otero, Sandoval, San Juan, Santa Fe and Sierra counties. The ages of the deceased ranged from a woman in her 30s from Otero County to a woman in her 80s from Santa Fe County. Five had been hospitalized and seven had underlying health conditions.

The total number of deaths in the state is now 5,012.

Also in the daily update, 30 counties and one correctional facility reported 687 cases, including 17 in Chaves County.

That was the second-highest number of cases in southeast New Mexico. Lea County had 23 cases, Curry County had 19, Eddy County had 15, Roosevelt County had 14, Lincoln County had eight, Quay County had five and De Baca County had one.

Bernalillo County had the most in the state at 147, followed by San Juan County with 91 and Doña Ana County with 68.

The total number of cases in New Mexico since March 2020 is now 271,898 including 12,655 in Chaves County.

As of Tuesday, 372 people were hospitalized in New Mexico for COVID-19.
