Chaves County woman among state’s COVID deaths Friday

A local woman is Chaves County’s third death related to COVID-19 this week, one of 10 reported by the state Friday.

The daily case update from the New Mexico Department of Health reported the woman, in her 80s, had been hospitalized. She is the county’s 203rd death associated with the virus.

Three of the deceased were from San Juan County and the others were from Bernalillo, Curry, Lea, Lincoln, Rio Arriba and Santa Fe counties.

Their ages ranged from two men in their 50s from Rio Arriba and San Juan counties to two women in their 90s from Curry and San Juan counties. Five had been hospitalized and six had underlying conditions.

The total number of deaths in New Mexico related to COVID-19 is now 4,049.

NMDOH reported 1,055 new cases in 31 counties and two correctional centers. Chaves County had 30 cases, followed by Eddy County’s 26. Lea County had 16, Curry County had 11, Lincoln County had seven, De Baca and Roosevelt counties each had five, and Quay County had four.

Bernalillo County had 235 new cases, San Juan County had 172, Doña Ana County had 113 and Otero County had 90.

The total number of cases in New Mexico since March 2020 is now 275,209, including 12,788 in Chaves County.

As of Friday, there were 397 people in the hospital for COVID-19.
