Week ends with high numbers of COVID cases, hospitalizations

High numbers of new COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in New Mexico ended the week on Friday, with the state reporting 1,463 new cases and 435 hospitalizations.

Thirty-one counties reported new cases in Friday’s case update from the New Mexico Department of Health, including 34 cases in Chaves County.

Across the rest of southeast New Mexico, Eddy County reported 29 cases, Lincoln County had 24, Lea County had 14, De Baca County had 12, Curry County had 11, Roosevelt County had seven and Quay County had two.

In the rest of the state, Bernalillo County reported 373 cases, San Juan County had 216, Doña Ana had 212, and Otero County had 90.

The total number of cases in the state since March 2020 is 282,742, with 12,985 in Chaves County.

A dozen deaths related to COVID-19 were also reported Friday, including one in Chaves County. The man in his 50s had been hospitalized, according to the update.

Bernalillo, Lea, Lincoln and Valencia counties each reported two deaths, and San Juan, Santa Fe and Eddy counties each reported one. The ages of the deceased ranged from a man and a woman in their 30s from Lea and Valencia counties to a woman in her 90s from Bernalillo County. Nine had been hospitalized and eight had underlying health conditions.

The total number of deaths in New Mexico is now 5,113 including 206 in Chaves County.
