Authorities are still trying to determine a motive and identify the gunman in a Wednesday shooting that left one man injured.

“We believe it to be random and we don’t have a motive right now at all,” Chaves County Sheriff Mike Herrington said Thursday morning.

Deputies were called to the intersection of Country Club and Brown roads Thursday in reference to a shooting that occurred at about 6 p.m.

Herrington said the victim, who was shot in the arm, was later airlifted to a medical center outside the area to receive treatment for what is believed to be a non-life threatening injury. The victim is not believed to have known the assailant.

The victim later told investigators that before the shooting he was driving along Country Club Road, approaching the intersection with Brown Road, when a dark-colored vehicle pulled in front of him, preventing the victim from moving.

A Hispanic male, described by the victim as heavyset and bald, then emerged from the other vehicle with a handgun. Herrington said the victim tried to speed away when the assailant fired at least one shot that traveled through the driver’s side window, striking the victim.

Later the victim said he did not take any actions leading up to the altercation that could have set the other motorist off.

Herrington said investigators are in the process of looking through security video in the area and collecting evidence. People with information about the incident or related to a possible suspect can contact the Sheriff’s Office at 575-624-6500.
