State reports 2 local COVID deaths Tuesday

Two Chaves County women were among the 11 deaths related to COVID-19 reported Tuesday by the New Mexico Department of Health.

A woman in her 50s and another in her 70s bring the county’s total of deaths related to the virus to 221. Both had been hospitalized, according the the NMDOH daily case update.

Five of the deceased were from Lea County. Cibola, Curry, Doña Ana and Lincoln counties each reported one death. Eight had been hospitalized and five had underlying health conditions. Their ages ranged from a woman in her 30s from Lea County to a woman in her 90s from Cibola County.

The total number of deaths in the state is 5,430.

Thirty-one counties and one correctional facility reported 969 new cases of COVID-19. It’s the first daily case report of less than 1,000 new cases since Nov. 2.

Chaves County had 18 new cases, as did Eddy County. Curry County had the highest total in southeast New Mexico with 30. Roosevelt County had 20, Lea County had 17, Quay County had 10, Lincoln County had eight and De Baca County had seven.

Bernalillo County had 341 new cases, followed by Sandoval County with 108 and Doña Ana County with 97.

The total number of cases in New Mexico since March 2020 is 325,272, including 14,203 in Chaves County.

As of Tuesday, there were 666 people hospitalized for COVID-19 in New Mexico.
