Against Taos on Friday, Goddard senior Noah Reese led the team in scoring and rebounds with 23 points, including 11 free throws, and 15 boards. Junior Mitchell Schooley contributed with nine assists and eight points. The Rockets won 65-60 in overtime.

“The boys kept their poise when the game got physical and we made our free throws,” Rockets head coach Anthony Mestas said after the game.

Four Rockets scored at least eight points and the team made 20 free throws in total. The Rockets held Taos to nine points in the fourth quarter and six in overtime on the defensive end.

“They stepped up and played good man-to-man defense,” Mestas said regarding the Rockets’ defense in the clutch.

Goddard’s Jameel Cannon and Schooley registered six steals, with seniors Damian Aragon and Reese putting up three each.

The Rockets took down Santa Fe Prep Saturday by a final score of 55-40.

Rockets junior Jerrick Mendoza scored 15 points and Aragon scored 10 against Santa Fe. Schooley contributed eight points and six assists.

“The entire team got some quality minutes,” Mestas said of their experience at the Ruidoso tournament. “Mendoza had some really good outside shooting.”

On defense, the team stole the ball 20 times and grabbed 36 boards, including 14 offensive rebounds.

“The boys played through fatigue from last night as the game against Taos took a lot out of them,” Mestas said Saturday. “They pushed through and won the game.”

Goddard will face the Coyotes at Roswell High School on Tuesday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m., starting a three-game road trip.
