The Roswell Police Department is investigating the first reported shooting of a person within the city limits in 2022.

A 29-year-old man was identified as a victim of a non-fatal shooting on Wednesday while he was at the Lovelace Regional Hospital emergency room.

According to an incident report filed at 9:28 p.m., the shooting occurred outside a hotel in the 3600 block of North Main Street.

“It is believed the shot may have been fired in the hotel parking lot, either outside or inside a vehicle. The victim had a single gunshot to his lower leg,” said Todd Wildermuth, spokesman for the RPD.

He said additional information was not available as of press time and that the investigation is ongoing.

While that represents the first shooting in Roswell in 2022, the Chaves County Sheriff’s Office previously arrested two people in connection with a non-fatal shooting that occurred at about 1 a.m. on Jan. 2 in the 1500 block of East 17th Street.

Anthony Alvarado, 21, and Deniece Lopez, 19, have been charged in connection with an incident in which a man was shot in the leg.

Alvarado is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, a third-degree felony, and tampering with evidence, a fourth-degree felony. Lopez is charged with conspiracy to commit tampering with evidence, which is a felony but could be charged at different levels.

Alvarado’s case has been bound over to New Mexico 5th Judicial District Court, while Lopez’s case is in the Chaves County Magistrate Court. Neither have entered pleas yet on the charges.
