The Goddard girls were up double digits at the beginning of the third quarter but the Coyotes were able to hang on.

“We continue to advocate that we play hard and trust the process,” Roswell head coach Daniel Smith said. “The team played with great heart and effort and we never quit, even if we are down 14 in the first half, so I am proud of them.”

The Roswell girls scored in the post and applied pressing defense on Goddard that forced turnovers.

“We would like to handle the pressure better,” Goddard High School girls basketball head coach Christopher Roybal said.

After two straight threes from Roswell freshman Bryana Castro, the score was even at the end of the third quarter.

Roswell kept the pressure on Goddard’s backcourt while attacking the paint for two or a drawn foul. The Lady Coyotes nurtured their lead and ran the clock to finish the Rockets in the fourth.

“Their press bothered us a little bit and forced us to make some silly mistakes,” Roybal said. “It’s a game we’ll definitely learn and grow from.”

The Lady Coyotes will face the Rams in Rio Rancho on Friday, Jan. 14 and the Lady Rockets will be at Hobbs to face the Eagles on Saturday, Jan. 15.
