“We had some tough losses early on in the season, and I’m just so happy for the kids,” Goddard boys basketball head coach Anthony Mestas said after the game. “We are on a four-game win streak. They battled, and they worked hard.”

The Coyotes boys hung around in the first quarter by keeping the score to a tight 17-14 in favor of the Rockets.

It was the second quarter when things began to break down for the Coyotes, allowing the Rockets to go on a 12-4 run.

“We have tried all season to get them to understand the importance of every game,” Roswell High School boys head coach Dude Burrola said. “Every team we play is looking to beat us and we can’t have a letdown.”

After a three-point buzzer-beater by Goddard junior Jerrick Mendoza, the invading Rockets were up by 13 coming into the third quarter.

“Every time we step on that court, regardless of who we are playing, we have to be ready and defend the name on the front of our jersey,” Burrola said. “We have struggled with that all season.”

In the fourth quarter, Roswell High put together a run, but not enough to topple Goddard at the end of the night.

Burrola said that all the team can do is keep getting ready for “a very, very tough district.”

“Take nothing away from Goddard,” Burrola said. “They played well, and we didn’t step up.”

Roswell High will be facing the Rams in Rio Rancho on Friday night, Jan. 14, while Goddard will go against the Lobos in Chaparral on the same day.
