The Roswell Police Department arrested the driver of a pickup that allegedly led officers on a brief chase Wednesday night on Second Street.

Just before 10 p.m., an officer attempted a traffic stop on a Nissan Titan pickup truck that did not have taillights on at West Second Street and North Sycamore Avenue, according to RPD Public Information Officer Todd Wildermuth.

The truck fled westbound on Second Street with the officer in pursuit. However, the pursuit was called off for public safety concerns as the truck drove at high speeds amid traffic as it headed outside the city limits, Wildermuth said.

A short time later, the truck traveled eastbound on Second Street, then headed south on Brown Road and crashed into a pole as officers arrived.

The driver, identified as William Atkinson, 34, ran from the truck but was quickly apprehended, according to Wildermuth, and was found to be carrying a small amount of methamphetamine. Atkinson was booked into the Chaves County Detention Center on charges of aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer, possession of a controlled substance and a municipal court warrant for failure to pay fines.
